Item Description

Tim Clifford

Warning Sign (No. 4), 2015

Ink on paper and paper inlay

30 x 22.5 inches

Warning Sign (No. 4) belongs to Tim Clifford’s Threat Assessment series, a body of work exploring our relationship to violence, guns, and fear, through the imagery of early 20th century carnival shooting galleries. Clifford began work on the series in the aftermath of the mass shooting at his childhood elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut in December 2012. The stark black and white drawings contrast the delicacy of the paper surface with the violence invited by the originals.

Item Special Note

Tim Clifford’s first New York solo exhibition was presented at Howl! Happening Gallery in December 2015. He is currently completing work on Monument for a Missing Island, a sculpture commission for FLOW16 on Randall’s Island opening, opening in May 2016. His work was recently seen in Bronx Calling: The Third AIM Biennial at the Bronx Museum of the Arts, in Respond! at Smack Mellon in 2015, and at the historic Greenwood Cemetery chapel in Brooklyn in 2014. Clifford received an Emerging Artist Fellowship from Socrates Sculpture Park in 2007 and a NYFA fellowship in sculpture in 2001. He received his B.A. from Bard College and his M.F.A. from the School of Visual Arts. He lives and works in Brooklyn.
