Item Description
This Cambodian Temple rubbing purchased in 1999 in Siem Reap, Cambodia, home to the ancient temples of Angkor Wat.
The contrasting black and cream color bring the exceptional execution of this rubbing, where detai,s are clear, crisp. The rubbing is made by placing thick rice paper on a carved stone relief of a temple wall and then brushed with water until the paper adheres and molds itself to the wall, clearly displaying the carvings beneath. The artist carefully adds color to the raised part of the paper. After the paper has dried, it is pealed from the wall and the “rubbing” dramatically shows a representation of the ancient carvings.
