Item Description

This dark red wine bursts from the glass in a profusion of red and black fruits, game, umami, underbrush, and cedar, all laid upon a foundation of minerals. Broad-shouldered and elegant, this mid-weight bottling whooshes across the palate with a silky feel, finishing in bewitching herbaceous and mineral notes. Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único is one of Spain's most sought-after and collected wines; a blend of 80-90% Tempranillo with 10-20% Cabernet Sauvignon and a small amount of Merlot, these wines' composition varies with each release, but it consistently derives from vines that are over 40 years old, with some of the vines being 80 years old or more. Vega-Siclia customarily releases Único with ten years of maturation in the estate’s cellars; the wine typically spend seven years aging in large, new and old oak casks, with three years in bottle before release.

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 1991 is a gorgeous, deep ruby/purple-colored, remarkably youthful effort offering sweet vanilla notes intertwined with black currants, cherry liqueur, flowers, spice box, and tobacco leaves. Full-bodied and intense, with sweet tannin, outstanding density as well as purity, and a layered mouthfeel, this unevolved 1991 needs another 3-4 years of cellaring; it should last for 20-25 years. It's a wine of great elegance as opposed to power. (RP)   (4/2004)
