Item Description
The aim of Brimmer and May Summer Camp is to provide a warm, creative environment for children to grow, learn, and laugh out loud.
This Design and Develop: STEAM program offers campers hands-on, interactive science, technology, engineering, art, and math activities designed to engage their creativity and ability to problem-solve. Students will use the laser cutter, 3D printer, vinyl cutter, soldering stations, and embroidery machine in Brimmer’s STEAM lab to design and build robots, e-textiles, and model rockets.
Robotics: Students will be introduced to the Arduino micro-controller. As most students are expected to have limited programming knowledge, we will use Scratch for Arduino (S4A) that will keep the learning of complex syntax to a minimum. Students will work in small groups to design and build a small 2WD robot that can autonomously navigate through a simple obstacle course.
E-textiles: Students will be introduced to the Arduino lilypad, which can also be programmed with S4A. Students will work in small groups to design a T-Shirt that incorporates the lilypad with various input and output devices. The design will be cut from heat transfer vinyl and bonded to the shirts, and then the lilypad and associated electronics will be sewn in.
Model rocketry: Students will investigate the field of aerodynamics and build single stage Estes model rockets and launch them from a launch pad on the field.
