Item Description

This is a painting of Maya, one of Wildlife SOS's first rescued elephants.

Note from the artist

"The painting took a few months to evolve.  The images are from photographs taken by Lata Bhasin with her permission and encouragement.  There are words relating to the plight of these special beings in the painting, in English and also in Hindi and Malayalam (the language of Kerala, and my mother tongue).  The fading, receding images of the elephants in the background are also symbolic of the danger we have of losing them unless we make reparation.

I started the painting making sketches in acrylic directly onto the  metre  square canvas, and continued for months painting in acrylic, trying to empathise with my subject through paint and the actual process of painting.  The painting has gone through many stages including the elephants appearing behind bars!   Only an X-ray will reveal the full journey the painting has taken (and the photographs I took at various stages)!  The lettering was introduced to make me (and viewer) to engage with the plight of these magnificent beings and the part played by man, The fading elephants in the background being a reminder of the very real possibility of extinction if we continue to ignore the effect of urbanisation, deforestation, captivity etc.  I have fused to the surface silver leaf to represent greed and coffee grounds to represent waste, all of these being devices used to engage with the story of my painting.  I finally used oil paint to complete the work.  So the painting is a  mixed media piece."
