Item Description
The 2nd graders explored immigration and the history of California. Each student was asked to create a Zentangle, which reflects both the illumination and reflection that comes with their studies by using light and symbols. There are no mistakes in Zentangles, but there are patterns and surprises. All of the students Zentangles were woven together to create a beautiful and complex unified whole. The larger image was then wrapped around a light box, which is made out of plexiglass, and lasercut in the shape of the state of California.
Each student then drew a symbol that they felt represented an aspect of their curriculum, reminding us of the Native Indians, missions, Gold Rush, multi-ethnic immigration, railroad building, and more. The symbols were strategically placed on the shape of the state of California. This thoughtfully abstract piece of art will surely be a talking piece and light up any area of your home or office. This project was made possible through the generous help of TAP Plastics of San Mateo, as well as Steve Westwood and Michelle Grau of the Hillsborough Campus Nueva I-Lab.
