Item Description
The title of this calavera is “San Deezy Por Vida.” This resin and gold-painted skull has a brown bandana (representing Raza) with a C/S (Con Safos = With Respect) and the ChicanX Community. I embedded Aztec/Mexica motifs on the skull to honor our indigenous Ancestry.
I was impacted by the deaths of Edgar Sanchez Rios and Melanie Virgen, who were shot at Libby Lake Park in Oceanside in 2013. I created this Dia de los Muertos skull to commemorate San Diegan youth, who have crossed over to the other side due to draconian laws that target communities of color, police repression and street politics. This skull was showcased in the CHABSS Display Case (2015).
The overall message is that our youth are carriers of meaning and Brown Lives Matter.
