Item Description

Ana Maria Botero is a wife, mother, architect and artist.  She was born in Bogota, Colombia, where she lived and worked on architecture until 2001 when life brought her to Florida, United States.  She worked there for Vigneault and Hoos Architecture Inc., until 2005 when she moved again, this time to Colorado, when she started to paint.  Although she loves architecture, her heart is currently won over by art.  It has always been a hobby of hers but is now her passion.  She had her first art show in 2008 and since then she has shown her work in Colorado, Florida and California.

Searching for an inspiration for the Mask Project, I wanted to celebrate life and traditions, that’s why I choose The Barranquilla’s Carnival. It is Colombia’s most important folklore celebration and one of the biggest carnivals in the world.

The Carnival has traditions that date back to the 19th century. It is a cultural mix of Colombia’s population, the native, the European and the African people. The Carnival of Barranquilla is multicultural, diverse and rich in different cultural expressions and the UNESCO declared it as one of the Masterpieces of the oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
