Item Description

Enjoy this acrylic painting on stretched canvas (11 x 14) from Mt. Greylock Senior Anya Sheldon.

Anya has received numerous awards and recognition for her talents. On May 11, 2015, Massachusetts Congressman Richard Neal visited Mt. Greylock to host a ceremony awarding one student, junior Anya Sheldon, for winning the 2015 Congressional Art Competition. Commencing the ceremony, Neal spoke of the importance of art and creative students after being introduced by Visual Arts Teacher Jane-Ellen DeSomma where he praised Sheldon’s work ethic and talent, congratulating her for her effort and ensuring that the audience comprised of staff members, students, family members, and other community members recognized how impressive this feat truly was. Sheldon’s original acrylic painting “Quiet Ferocity”, selected from 111 entries from 16 schools, will hang in the U.S Capitol Building in Washington DC for the next year along with other winning pieces from across the country.

Anya also created an image that was used to create a new Town Flag in 2015.  The new flag has a single image that incorporates many of those concepts. In the background, there are three hills, with Mount Greylock in the middle with the War Memorial visible at the summit. In the center is a depiction of the 1753 House, a recreation of the kind of house occupied by the town's first settlers. The house appears to sit on a furrowed field, suggesting agriculture. At the bottom are the words "Culture, Education, Nature." At the top is 1765, the year of the town's founding.
