Item Description

This auction is for a Plate painted by Hudson Lillystone at the Purple Hippo Art Studio.

Six pediatric cancer patients had fun painting pottery at the Purple Hippo Art Studio in the Kuniansky Family Center within the Marcus Jewish Community Center on February 28.

Less than four percent of federal funding for cancer research is allocated to pediatric cancer. Yet 430 Georgia children will be diagnosed with cancer this year. The goal of Care Affair 2016 is to raise $110,000 for Atlanta-based non-profit CURE Childhood Cancer, dedicated to conquering pediatric cancer through funding research for better and targeted treatments. Because of the hardships placed on families of cancer patients, CURE also provides support through patient and family services.

More about Hudson:

Superheroes Come in All Sizes

Hudson LillystoneMost superheroes spend their time fighting dangerous villains. Super Hudson battles something much scarier—leukemia.

Last fall, Hudson Lillystone’s parents noticed that their 4-year-old wasn’t acting like her usual spunky self.

After a blood test at Hudson’s doctor’s office, the pediatrician called with the results, and he was extremely concerned. He recommended they take Hudson to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta as soon as possible to meet with the hematologist on standby.

Once at Egleston hospital, Hudson was immediately admitted. Soon after, doctors at the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center diagnosed her with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). The whirlwind, nine-day stay that followed involved port surgery, bone marrow and spinal fluid testing as well as the initial rounds of inpatient chemotherapy.

Super Hudson

Hudson faced this first and very trying week with amazing strength, channeling the power and inspiration of her favorite superheroes, Superman and Ironman. When she puts on the blue cape with a red super H logo that a family friend made for her, she becomes Super Hudson.

“Hudson is probably one of the toughest kids I know,” Hudson’s mother, Emily, said. “She’s been poked, prodded and sedated too many times to count, but she rarely cries. She handles it so matter-of-factly.”

Like her heroes, Super Hudson also had a faithful sidekick while staying at the Aflac Cancer Center. She named her IV pole—her constant companion in the hospital—Super Bernie and gave him his own red superhero cape. Hudson has an indomitable spirit that is contagious, and the nurses, doctors and staff enjoyed her spirited presence.

After finishing her inpatient stay at the Aflac Cancer Center, Hudson and her family were able to return home and prepare for her long-term outpatient chemotherapy treatment. Through it all, she has remained incredibly brave. She has never let cancer or its intimidating treatment get the best of her.

Hudson Strong

When Hudson began to lose her hair, she asked her parents if she could shave her head. “We got out the clippers, and she smiled through the whole thing,” Emily said. Hudson likes to confidently declare that she is “Hudson Strong,” never wanting to cover up the fact that she has a bald head.

Shortly after, Hudson was asked at the playground why she had no hair. “I have leukemia,” Hudson said. “Why does everybody keep asking me that?”

Hudson is set to finish her initial round of chemotherapy July 6, and will then be entering the lower-dose maintenance phase, which will last until 2016. Her family is optimistic, and this summer Hudson is planning on taking swimming lessons and going to dance camp. In true superhero fashion, Hudson is most excited for a trip to the islands of Hawaii to learn how to surf.

For Super Hudson, nothing is impossible.
