Item Description
Antoine-Louis Bayre (1796 - 1875) was a French sculptor known for his work as an animalier, or sculptor of animals. Bayre started as a goldsmith, but was admitted to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1818. Like his contemporary Delacroix, Bayre became fascinated with the power of animals. Bayre knew considerable success for his small bronzes and his larger pieces, often on classical themes. He was elected to the Académie des beaux-arts in 1854 and produced no new works after 1869.
After his death in 1875, additional casts were made from his original molds. This sculpture of a cat was most probably struck in the early 20th century.
This charming bronze is 4 inches high including a marble pedestal. It is stamped Bayre on the rock or cushion on which the cat sits, its tail curled around its legs.
