Item Description

Go from idea to first draft in five weeks, and learn fundamentals for the big and small screen!

Since 1989, Writers Boot Camp has launched major writing careers at the highest levels of the film and television industry through intensive screenwriting classes, coursework, membership benefits and support to writers. Our alumni have hundreds of major writing credits and thousands of hours of produced television and web series, including A-List writers, filmmakers, actors, executives and Emmy, Tony, WGA, Webby and Academy Award winners.

Certificate for a 5-Week Basic Training Screenwriting Course in Santa Monica. The course offers writers an opportunity to complete a script within 3 weeks after the last class, for which they will receive a Script Conference.

Writers Boot Camp Basic Training in Los Angeles of One-on-One from Anywhere

Commit 10 hours per week for seven weeks from start to first draft deadline.

Writers Boot Camp's Basic Training course teaches comprehensive fundamentals while you write a first draft of your feature-length, TV pilot or web series -- or even book outline, style sheet and sample chapters (In addition to all of the feature film and television credits, our alumni have more than 600 books and novels published.)

LA sessions start with two consecutive days, Friday evening from 5-10pm, including dinner, and Saturday morning 9:30am-12:30pm, and then continue with four weekly teleconferences, recorded for convenience, on five consecutive Fridays at 11:30am-12:45pm.

Basic Training also includes weekly Office Hours via phone and email with staff member for individual support for questions and creative reinforcement.

While Basic Training is great for a quick visit to LA while taking industry meetings, the same Basic Training coursework is also available One-on-One as soon as you have 10 hours available each week instead of waiting for a class start date.

One-on-One writers have additional access to four videos of our 25th Anniversary session taught by founder Jeffrey Gordon in October 2014. Instead of attending classes, materials are released each week and your instructor has a second set of Office Hours to foster your creative progress.

• Learn About Our One-on-One version of Basic Training

With either option, your first draft deadline is three weeks following the last teleconference for a total of seven weeks from the day you start.

Here's how the weekly agenda and exercises break down whether in LA or One-on-One:

Week 1: Basic Training Introduction establishes a professional writing approach with an intensive syllabus, clear screenwriting definitions, work strategies and strict deadlines. Starting with as little as a single sentence, you'll start shaping your script idea, answer your questions about the film and television business, and begin defining the entertainment conceits and parameters of your project.

Week 2: Obstacle Course defines a main-character driven, four segment (three-act) screenplay structure, as well as strategies for character development. Unique tools empower expression of your ideas in accessible, professional terms to create a more dynamic, layered adventure. Structure is also broken down for half-hour and hour-long television, and articulates tools for short-form and how tools apply to any scene.

Week 3: Conflict Escalation helps you to write with a new understanding of the script page and format. You'll use a practical outlining approach to get past the opening of your script to develop the parts of the entire story, allowing you greater mobility between big picture story points and smaller scene choices. You'll learn distinctions of movies and TV and an accelerated writing technique to quickly build the pages of your script.

Week 4: Trench Warfare pushes you through the middle pages of your screenplay to discover new possibilities while you write. An advanced scene work checklist helps you evaluate your own style to get you writing more visually - leaving unnecessary material behind and making every part of your script entertaining. You'll compare your story to the character voices and parameters you've designed or are required by your show.

Week 5: Character Crossfire tests the motivations of your principal characters and connects the supporting roles to your main character's journey. A comprehensive evaluation checklist helps you review the tools you've learned, refine your project goals and reflect deeper thematic stakes in your scene choices.

D-Day/Script Deadline: After the last teleconference or release of Week 5 materials, you'll have three weeks to complete your material. Office Hours will remain available for assistance.

You'll send a PDF of your material for evaluation by the Writers Boot Camp staff.  You'll prepare for an individual conference (30-45 minutes via phone) using the Evaluation Checklist learned in class to create a set of notes for your ongoing rewrite objectives.

Basic Training is primarily a first-draft course and is not a prerequisite for our full development process.  In Basic Training you complete a first draft quickly; while our full development and empowered rewriting coursework takes you through 10 drafts every six months--without quitting your day job!
