“It was good exercise for me to work in woodblock for the 30/30 Print Project this year. I am usually an abstract oil painter and my typical process is supported by experimentation, flaws and freedom. In paintings I edit and rework those flaws over (and over) until the painting builds depth and starts to breath on its own. I usually count on getting to that point using instinct versus planning. Woodblock is not as forgiving and it challenged me to plan a little more than is comfortable to me prior to the cutting. It gave me a lot more appreciation for the artists that work in this medium. As I cut on this block I verbally named it “Can’t Comb”. The long comb on one side is isolated from the strands balled up like yarn on the other side. Perhaps it’s a play on not coping or letting things tangle intentionally. It was lovely working with Jennifer Koch on printing this woodblock and I learned a lot during the process.”

The 30/30 Anniversary Print Project was an exhibition and silent auction supporting the youth education scholarship programs of the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts and Burlington City Arts, in honor of the Flynn Center and BCA's 30th anniversaries. Participating artists, lead by artist/project coordinators Gregg Blasdel, Jennifer Koch and Sumru Tekin, created prints in BCA's Print Studio at 250 Main Street, as well as the studio of Jennifer Koch.
