Item Description
Title: Smoky Ceremony
Description: High in a Himalayan valley, deep in a dugout nomad tent, we studied this smoky ceremony. Tibetan script was delicately inked on the stacks of paper stained with age. The monks chanted and played music in this thick sultry space. I sat inside the tent, but without understanding their words I felt like I was still outside.
Item Special Note
About The Photographer: Erika is a third year student at Quest, originally from London, ON.
"In my time at Quest, I am asking the question: How can we translate cultural differences? Although this question is based in language and linguistics, photography offers a different perspective. In the Visual Anthropology course, the most important thing I learned from Dr. William Thompson was to get closer. The only way to capture the nuances of (cultural) life is to leave boundaries behind and find your way inside. Get closer."
