Item Description

Function Wheels is an easy-to-use system for responding to aberrant behavior in the classroom. Each component guides users through the process of identifying, recording, and managing problem behaviors quickly and efficiently. It is the first all-inclusive, systematic approach for identifying the functions of problem behaviors and implementing research-based interventions to manage them. The kit is ideal for use by teachers, consultant teachers, teachers' assistants, special education teachers, or any instructor working in traditional and nontraditional learning environments.

The screening process begins by using the Function Wheel to identify the function of a particular behavior. One side of the Function Wheel displays antecedent conditions (what triggers a student's behavior) and the other side displays consequent conditions (how a student's behavior is maintained by the actions of others, also known as consequences or maintaining variables). The four Functional Categories are:
Attention: Behaviors with the Function Used to Obtain Attention
Escape: Behaviors with the Function Used to Escape
Tangible: Behaviors with the Function Used to Gain Access to Preferred Items
Automatic: Behaviors with the Function Maintained by Automatic Reinforcement

The Student Screening Sheet is used to log each incident of problem behavior. The Screening Sheet contains a Descriptive Notes section, used to record specific information about the antecedent or consequent conditions for each recorded function. At least 15 behavior incidents are recorded from at least 3 observations. This number represents an adequate sample to help identify the function of the problem behavior. However, a larger sample of environmental events can be collected to further verify hypothesis. The total occurrences of each of the Functional Categories are tallied and specific details about the function of the behavior are obtained.

The Intervention Wheels provide recommended responses and actions that can be immediately implemented to decrease problem behavior. Two double-sided Intervention Wheels cover all four Functional Categories: Attention and Escape on one Wheel, Tangible and Automatic on the other. The specific Intervention Wheel directly related to the identified function is turned to reveal the recommended research-based treatments.
The Intervention Wheels contain valuable information that highlights methods and other considerations across 6 intervention areas:

  1. Peers
  2. How to Respond
  3. Research-Based Intervention
  4. Curriculum
  5. Environment
  6. Proactive Strategies

The information provided is general and can be adapted specifically for the unique needs of each student.

The robust Guide to Behavioral Interventions provides research-based treatments for the management of behavior related to Attention, Escape, Tangible, and Automatic functions. Users can access step-by-step guidance on what to do when confronted with specific behavior situations. The Guide features conceptually systematic interventions that can be adapted and used as a resource to help identify specific management strategies. It is also very helpful when writing a Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP), as it contains specific, actionable items that can be incorporated into a student's BIP.

All of this is made accessible through the User Guide which describes how to use the Function Wheels system, step-by-step. The Function Wheels Kit includes:

  • User Guide
  • Function Wheel
  • 5-pack Student Screening Sheets
  • Intervention Wheels
  • Guide to Behavioral Interventions
