Item Description
“King Kong Tribune Tower” by Sara Cooper, grade 11
Medium: Acrylic Paint on Watercolor Paper
Probably one of the most iconic primates is King Kong. He represents a very significant landmark in cinema. As well being created through special effects the likes of which the world had never seen before, the image of him atop the Empire State Building is so prominent, Sara couldn’t help but try and incorporate it into the Monkey Project. In trying to blend that image with Oakland, Sara chose the iconic Tribune Tower.
Sara wrote: The reference image of King Kong I used came from the 1933 poster for the original movie. The biggest challenge I faced was in painting the Tribune Tower. I wanted to make the style of painting more simplified like the image of King Kong, so I had to resist the urge to capture every minute detail and instead aim to capture a better overall gestalt.
This is Sara’s third win in the monkey project, and in addition, has been a runner-up twice.
