The Day of the Dead coincides with Catholic All Soul’s Day when ancestors are celebrated with joy since death is not the final stage in one’s life but rather a step into a higher level of conscience.  The flowers and flowery forms around the eyes are meant to symbolize life.  The Rose as well as the blue color are also symbols of Mary, and sweet decorated skulls invite the departed to enjoy the gift and the memories.
