Item Description
The Art of Origami
Origami, from ori meaning "folding", and kami meaning "paper", is the Japanese art of paper folding. It is a fascinating and creative craft for children of all ages. Origami is also a valuable method for developing vital skills with educational benefits include behavioral skill, cooperative learning, a link to math, cognitive development, multi-cultural awareness and community building.
This year's Willow House project is a collaboration of the children making origami birds set in flight through the "window of development". Meaning, the development of the children from the 4th grade to the 6th is incredibly vast, and through this window, you see the development of not only the complexity in the birds, but the relationship of the color in each bird. The 4th grade made two different birds using white paper.. white because they are youngest lights in the classroom and void of the "colors" of the upper elementary. The 5th grade made one bird, but made it from two differing patterns, resulting in a slightly different bird. They used black paper... black because it has absorbed all light, through the previous year in upper elementary, they gained much through their experiences. Lastly, the 6th grade made two different birds altogether from red paper... red representing wisdom, wisdom gained from the two previous years in upper elementary. Giving them the ability to think and act using the knowledge, experience, understanding, common sense and insight in any situation on their journey in flight from Montessori de Terra Linda!
Dr. Maria Montessori viewed creativity within the context of total development – intellectual, artistic, emotional and physical. Her plotting of child development traces the most significant of creative endeavours – the making of the personality, the construction of the child's self.
