Item Description
Artist: Steve Dana
Title: Rabbit
2015
Curly Maple
About the artist: Steve Dana lives and works in Erie, Pennsylvania. He received his BFA in Sculpture from the University of Edinboro in Pennsylvania in 1990. Since that time he has participated in numerous group and juried shows throughout the region, most notably a solo exhibition in the Holstein Gallery at the Erie Art Museum in 2012 entitled Backyard.
His sculptures are primarily made of wood and demonstrate his mastery of the traditional methods of woodworking. For the past five years, his primary focus has been on abstract images of animals and bird. Details are removed and the creatures are boiling down to their essence, allowing the viewer to focus on the contour, surface, and texture of the work. The works are smooth and heavily coated with lacquer, taking on the appearance of candy. The creations seem to be at peace with their place in the world, seductively drawing the viewer into a world that they wish were real; a world (word choice, world has been used a lot in this sentence, perhaps realm?) of happy creatures that ask nothing of us — all they want is to be loved.
