This bear was modeled after Helena (wife No. 1) portrayed by Saycon Sengbloh in Broadway’s Tony Award-nominated play Eclipsed. The bear's ensemble features a head wrap made from fabric worn by Ms. Sengbloh in the show, a handmade, distressed printed silk blouse that is a miniature replica of the original design, a hand-colored and distressed sarong and miniature Adidas slides. Her stand is overlaid with original fabric from another costume Ms. Sengbloh wears in the show.
The bear comes autographed on each pay by Costume Designer Clint Ramos and actress Saycon Sengbloh. The bear also has an audio feature in the right paw with a personalized message from Ms. Sengbloh.
The winner also will receive two VIP house seat tickets to see one of Eclipsed’s final performances June 16-18, and a special backstage meet-and-greet immediately after the show with Ms. Sengbloh.
Each bear included in this auction was a labor of love made by Wardrobe Supervisor Kay Grunder, Hair and Makeup Supervisor Sarah Jordan and Dresser Liz Lee, with assistance by Adeola Role, understudy to Rita and Helena, and Joniece Abbott-Pratt, understudy to Bessie and Maima.
Special thanks to Clint Ramos for his beautiful costume designs, 101 Productions for all its support and Stephen Byrd and Alia Jones-Harvey for bringing Eclipsed to Broadway.
