Item Description

This special edition Northwoods Atkinson Traveler was crafted by master builder Rollin Thurlow to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Allagash Wilderness Waterway.  The ribs and planking are Northern White Cedar harvested from the forest surrounding the Allagash River.  The red spruce rails are from the Baxter State Park experimental forest.  The birdseye maple decks and tiger maple thwarts are from a farm near the shop.  A true Northern Maine canoe.  Painted forest green with a gray bottom and red waterline, and featuring the AWW logo on the bow, this canoe is a floating piece of art.

The Atkinson Traveler, 17 1/2 is modeled after the famous guide canoes used initially by professional guides with their "sports" but soon adopted by serious sportsmen and wilderness travelers alike. The Traveler boasts a generous carrying capacity, a handsome yet relatively low profile, a fine entry for speed yet ample buoyancy in the quarters and amidships. The modest rocker allows quick maneuvering in rapids, while the overall length makes straight tracking on the lakes possible even without the addition of a keel.
