Archie Boyd, or "Arch" as he is known to his friends, is an Engineer by profession and an Artist by choice. His first endeavors were oil paintings of still life and seascapes of the rugged pacific coast. While in Wales, U.K., on a three-year project, he had the opportunity to be tutored by a Master Engraver from the West of England College of Art. He applied his new skills to the sketching of the Edwardian castles, churches and bridges of which there are many in picutresque Wales.
Upon his return to the United States in 1972, he chose New orleans for his home and has concentrated on sketches of the historic Vieux Carre.
Drawing 1 - Brulator Courtyard
Brulator Court, formerly Seignouret Court, 520 Royal Street was built in 1816 by Francois Seignouret of Bordeaux, France, a wine importer and furniture maker of note. Later from 1870-86 Pierre Ernest Brulatour, another wine importer, used the building. In 1900 it passed into the hands of William Ratcliff/Irby. The entresol, or mezzanine, a half story just above the ground floor was used to store the casks of wine. The large black pot often found in French Quarter patios, was probably a container of olive oil imported from Spain. The time worn stone slabs of the courtyard were used as ballast for the Spanish Ships. They were highly prized for this purpose, and for sidewalks since there is no natural stone of any kind in New Orleans.
Drawing 2 - Bosque Courtyard
This beautiful courtyard, and its surrounding building on historic Chartres Street, was built by Baotolme Bosque, a prosperous Spanish merchant, in 1795. It became the home of Suzette Bosque, Governor Claiborne's third wife. These secluded gardens enabled the residents to live unobserved and insulated from street noises and activities. There are many of them throughout the Vieux Carre, unchanged, quiet, each a verdant showplace.
