Item Description

Alethea Dawson has been a Hospice volunteer for just over a year. My Mother and Father were both Hospice Patients. My Mom passed away when I was 17 and my Dad when I was 26. Hospice was really there for us and I knew I wanted to give back and be a part of the Hospice team. I had to wait a year from my Dad passing and then got on board. I have now been with Hospice a little over a year and it is one of the most rewarding things I could do with my time. I have a patient I have been with from the start. We have bonded over our love for cats and traveling.

The name of my Mask is “Living in the Ocean”. The Mask represents the life of the Ocean and the beauty Mother Earth gives to us. I recently did a Yoga Teacher Training in Bali. I was there for a whole month. When I first told my patient about it she was really excited and told me I help her live and that she lives through me. She said she has always wanted to see Bali and that she is happy she got to see it through me. I wanted to bring back a little bit of Bali so I gathered some sand, flower petals, stones and shells to decorate my Mask. All the items on this Mask come from Bingin Beach, Bali, Indonesia. This Mask has a piece of me too. Each time I take something from the Ocean or Earth I tear off one of my nails or leave a strand of hair in exchange for what I am taking. Each of the girls in or training put a feather in our hair. I cut it out with the little bit of my hair that was attached. Much like the Ocean and people we often come in contact with in life, they can take a little piece of our heart and leave a little piece of theirs. I feel honored that I got to participate and decorate a Mask this year.
