Item Description

"It is sadder to find the past again, and find it inadequate to the present, than it is to have it elude you and remain forever a harmonious conceptions of memory." F. Scott Fitzgerald.

"The present is my favorite time period," states the artist Hawkes of The Phoenix Art Group. He draws inspiration from the exchange of ideas and techniques that happens when working in a collaborative studio atmosphere. Hawkes feels strongly about the importance of nurturing his creative evolution and he employs numerous processes when creating artwork. "Sometimes I start with a clear idea of the result and I employ references, sketches and studies to get there. I also like the honesty and spontaneity that comes from my emotions and intuition when painting on the fly." Interestingly, the artist's many creative ideas and pathways come to him in the transition state between sleep and waking. The artist was born in Las Vegas, Nevada and subsequently grew up on Utah and Arizona. Hawkes studied painting and drawing at Arizona State University then spent several years in private study with prominent professional artists. He has an array of eclectic influences from Russian impressionism to the New York School and has been impacted by such artists as Gerhard Richter, James Turrell and John Register. Hawkes and his family are active in the outdoors. "I love the wilderness and the creative energy and perspective that once can find there," muses the artist. He has a particular interest in architecture, especially sustainable design. Hawkes is also a big fan of soccer and a key supporter of Manchester United.
