Point Reyes National Seashore Association is happy to partner with Alcatraz Cruises for a sister park adventure on Alcatraz Island for four.
This trip kicks off at Pier 33 in San Francisco where you and three guests will board the Hornblower Hybrid, the nation's first hybrid and eco friendly vessel powered largely by solar panels, wind turbines, and grid electricity. Once on board, escape is nearly impossible as you travel across the bay to what is commonly referred to as The Rock, but is actually one of 401 National Park Service units helping to teach and share our American hertiage and history.
Once on land, travel back in time to the site of the first lighthouse and US built fort on the West Coast, then tour the federal penitentiary that operated here from 1934 to 1963. To this day, Alcatraz is best known as one of the world's most legendary prisons which held some of the most notorious criminals including Al "Scarface" Capone and the "Birdman" Robert Stroud who helped to establish the island's notoriety.
Many people are unaware of the wealth of other stories to be learned on the island, including the natural history of the island's diverse plant and wildlife. The Civil War-era buildings dotting the island give insight into the 19th century when the island served as both a harbor defense fort and a military prison. Come spot the visible remains of the American Indian Occupation that started in 1969 after the prison closed, highlighting an important milestone in the American Indian rights movement.
Your tour includes: ferry service to and from Alcatraz; a 45-minute audio presentation Doing Time: The Alcatraz Cellhouse Tour, featuring actual correctional officers and prisoners who lived and worked on the Island; an orientation video by Discovery Channel; ranger and docent tours through the historic landmarks; and free range of most of the property and historic gardens.
