Item Description

Adeline Gray is a wrestler from the United States, who became world champion in 2014.

Gray was born on January 15, 1991 in Denver, Colorado and began her wrestling career with the help of her father. She made her Olympic debut at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, but she is far from a rookie. Gray has competed in every world championship since 2011, taking home three gold medals in two weight classes.

On September 27, 2012 Gray competed in the 2012 Women’s World Wrestling Championships in Edmonton, Canada. In her first match she faced off against Dzhanan Manolova of Bulgaria, Adeline came out a little slow then exploded with a great 3 point throw and won the 1st period 3-0. In the second period she took Manolova down and turned her in a leg lace for another point, then she just defended the rest of the period for a 2-0 win. The next round she faced off against Yoshiko Inoue of Japan, the only one to score on Adeline. Inoue scored first in the first period but Adeline came back and scored on a push out to secure the 1st period win. In the second Adeline looked in control with her under hooks scoring a throw-by and getting her leg lace for a 3-0 win. In the Semi Finals she faced off against Kaur Navjot of India, Adeline looked very confident and showed no fear and dominated Navjot from the start. Adeline secured her second takedown and controlled her legs standing tilts to a stack for the pin.

In the Finals she faced off against Dorothy Yeats of Canada only 19 years old and the crowd favorite. Adeline came out very confident and took it to Yeats throwing her for 3 points and scoring in another takedown to win the 1st period 4-0. In the second Adeline stayed in control and secured a takedown late in the period then put Yeats on her back with her signature arm-bar-wing and pinned her with 4 seconds left for a dominating win. After her win she ran into the stands and hugged her parents “World Champion”.

About the Mask Artist: Dr. Rhonda Richmond is an individual with Learning Disabilities/ Differences (LD), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and Sensory Issues. Dr. Richmond faced many difficulties when trying to use her native language (English) to communicate with the outside world. She spent a great many years of her life pretending to understand what others meant, how others felt, and why others did the things they did. When Dr. Richmond began to paint, many of her language issues changed. She was able to access the world in a way that she never had before. Now she describes herself a second language learner who just happened to be taught the second language first. Dr. Richmond's work IS about telling the story, reaching out, learning to learn and using her voice. A special education teacher in Aurora Public Schools, Dr. Richmond still shows her artwork in limited showings around the Denver Metro area.
