The Helmand Restaurant is named after Afghanistan's longest and most important river (and also the owners' first-born son!) It is one of several restaurants nationally that are owned and operated by members of one of Afghanistan's most famous and prominent families. In the last decade, these restaurants helped introduce and popularize Afghan cuisine to America.
In Baltimore's historic Mount Vernon district -- just a short walk from the Inner Harbor and major arts and cultural institutions-the Helmand has won perennial "best" awards in Zagat's survey, the Baltimore Sun, BALTIMORE Magazine, the Baltimore City Paper, and other publications.
