If you google Hopscotch Oakland, the list of rave reviews from press and fans are endless.

We couldn't say it better than the San Francisco Chronicle's Restaurant Critic Michael Bauer in his recent THREE-STAR review...

Hopscotch is a study in contrasts.

It's a small place, but has big ambitions.

It looks like a diner, but the cocktails are as well crafted as you'll find at Bourbon and Branch.

It serves American regional fare, which goes with the red chairs and stools and checkerboard-patterned floor, but there's a subtle Japanese influence in many dishes.

The contrast starts with the owners: Jenny Schwarz, who is known for her front-of-the-house skills, and Kyle Itani, who is behind the stove. He's worked at Yoshi's in San Francisco and the Meatball Shop in New York. There couldn't be two more diverse places: the stylized modern interior and subtle nuances of the flavors at Yoshi's versus the Lower East Side grittiness and bold, hearty food of the Meatball Shop, whose chef-owner, Daniel Holzman, was the opening chef-partner at SPQR.

Now Schwarz and Itani are forging their own path, another example of the perseverance and passion that characterizes today's Bay Area dining scene. They raised $20,000 of seed money on Kickstarter to help fund the 37-seat restaurant, which took over the space of a former barbecue restaurant in Uptown Oakland.

By looking at the interior, you'd never guess that the menu - or the cocktails crafted by Zach Miller - would be so refined. You'll find the classic Corpse Reviver II ($10) with some variations such as quinquina and Combier replacing the Lillet and Cointreau. There's also Plaid on Plaid ($9), where frothy egg whites cap the blend of scotches and lemon, sweetened with honey. These are cocktails worth their price tag.  Click here to read the full review.
