The world’s best-selling liquor might just be something you’ve never heard of, it’s not vodka, not whiskey, but a Chinese distilled spirit called baijiu (pronounced as By-Jo) that is made from grains. Kweichow Moutai is the No. 1 brand in the baijiu category, also named as the national liquor of China. This 15-Year Moutai is a very rare masterpiece that is smooth, mellow yet complex, something can only be created by time itself. It makes an excellent collection piece or luxury gift.

Born over 500 years ago in China’s Guizhou (Kweichow) Province, Moutai has a special place in the hearts of Chinese people and plays a central role in the Chinese culture.

Moutai is a symbol of friendship, therefore is the liquor of choice during many important celebratory occasions. For example it is often served at during high-level Chinese State dinners when foreign dignitaries are being welcomed. Also, it is also frequently given as a gift by Chinese foreign delegations to their foreign counterparts.

The brewing of Moutai is a complex process passed down through the generations. Naturally produced fermentation starter culture, produced with premium wheat harvested only during the Dragon Boat Festival, is mixed with organic sorghum and then carefully fermented and distilled over 7 cycles. The entire production process takes a year to complete, and then the distillate collected is aged for at least 3 years or more. To achieve the peerless aroma and flavor of Moutai liquor, over 200 base liquors from different years with different fragrance must be blended to achieve the desirable balance. The Moutai liquor is strictly a blend of liquors, even distilled water is not added to the product during the production process. This makes it a one-of-a-kind premium baijiu. 106 proof.

The Moutai liquor is bold but well balanced and with lots of complexity as well as a very long finish. It is traditionally consumed during meals and served in ½ oz. shot glasses. It pairs well with foods that have heavier flavors. Within the realm of Asian culinary, stir-fried lobster with black pepper is a great example. As for Western cuisines, Moutai typically pairs well with fattier dishes with strong sauces or robust flavors from roasting or grilling.

The Kwiechow Moutai is presented in a lovely decorative box which includes a ceramic carafe and a rectangular box, specially designed to identify whether the Moutai product is authentic or not. When pushed on the back of the identifier, it will light up and then you can look at the logo on the cap through the lens.
