Item Description

Jane C. Carlson is an impressionist artist based in Boca Grande, Florida. Born in Massachusetts, she began her artistic career as a model, gracing the covers of magazines like Glamour, Vogue, and Life. She moved into television, making over 50 commercials as well as singing live commercials for The Tonight Show, The Perry Como Show, and Good Morning America. She retired from modeling in 1980 to focus on painting. Carlson and her husband Byron, who passed away in April 2016, had three sons together.

Carlson calls herself an impressionist painter, looking quickly at things to gain inspiration and then painting mostly without visual aids. Her favorite medium is watercolor because it is easier to work with quickly, rather than with oil, which takes longer to dry. She enjoys painting in her studios, splitting time between her studio in Boca Grande and an old barn she uses as a studio on Candlewood Lake in Connecticut.

This painting of a snowy scene, with a white farmhouse surrounded by dark trees, would be a lovely addition to an art collection. The rustic beauty of the outdoors is expressed in this piece, as well as the charm of a rural area. The chill of a New England winter really comes through!

Carlson and her family lived in bronxville, N.Y., for many years, where she exhibited frequently. The donor's (Elizabeth Betts Leckie) father bought the painting in an exhibition in the late 1970s
