Ravenswood Winery, Sonoma
Three Bottle, Six-Liter Horizontal 2000 Zinfandel
Value: $1,500
One 6-liter each from the following vineyards: Old Hill Ranch, Barricia Vineyard and Belloni Vineyard.
At unique Old Hill Ranch vineyard in Sonoma Valley, no pesticides or irrigation are employed. The scant tonnage – combined with ideal growing conditions for the 110 year old vines – produces exceptionally intense, spicy fruit. Old Hill Zinfandel is dark and rich with provocative flavors of blackberries, mint and black pepper. Big, deep, generous, complex, uncompromising, and inimitable. Planted in the 1880s, Old Hill is the oldest vineyard in the Ravenswood portfolio.
The color of the 2000 Barricia Zinfandel is a beautiful ruby-garnet, and the scents are of warm blackberry pie, leather, smoke, chocolate, and anise. Deliciously dry and complex, a softly round wine whose gentle mouthfeel disguises power and heft.
Situated in the cool, often foggy, Russian River Valley near Fulton, Belloni vineyard is one of Ravenswood’s last Zinfandel vineyards to be harvested. Originally planted in the early 1900's, winemaker Joel Peterson started working with the Belloni Zinfandel in 1990. The wine was so good that Belloni made vineyard-designated status the very next year. Due to the long ripening time and the penetrating intervals of afternoon sun, the Belloni Zinfandel is deeply colored with an intense odor and the flavor character of boysenberries and blueberries, mingled with the traditional spice and smoky characteristics of Zinfandel.
