MY ARTWORK ALLOWS ME TO EXPRESS MYSELF VISCERALLY, CHOOSING
COLORS THAT APPEAR TO CLASH IN ORDER TO CREATE SOMETHING THAT IS
VIBRANT AND PERHAPS EVEN UNEXPECTED. I HOPE THAT VIEWERS WILL GET A LITTLE AGITATED AND ASK THEMSELVES, “I WONDER WHAT SHE’S GETTING AT.”

PUTTING YOURSELF IN AN UNCOMFORTABLE SITUATION CAN BE GOOD FOR YOU BECAUSE IT HELPS YOU GROW AND PROPELS YOU INTO BIGGER AND BETTER THINGS. THE VIEWER BECOMES AN ACTIVE PARTICIPANT IN ENJOYING AND INTERPRETING THE WORKS. THIS EMPOWERS THE VIEWER AND THAT PLEASES ME!

Gladys began painting in earnest only a few years ago. She had her first solo Art Show at the Friendship Heights Village Art Gallery. Since then, she has participated in shows at the Women’s Club of Chevy Chase, the Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington and the Montpelier Arts Center in Laurel, Maryland.

Before turning to painting, Gladys had a full and rich career teaching French and Spanish. She coordinated language programs in Anne Arundel County, Maryland and at UMBC’s Outreach Program. She ran an international language camp for young children and served as a consultant to school districts and universities in the US and abroad. She holds a Bachelor’s degree from Brooklyn College, a Masters from the University of Maine, and a Doctorate from New York
University.

"July 4th Lights Up the Sky" 2016

Dr. Gladys C. Lipton is a former teacher of French and Spanish, and former Head of the New York City’s Foreign Language Program, K-12. She also directed the Foreign Language and ESOL Programs in the Anne Arundel County Public Schools, Maryland. An important part of teaching foreign languages consists of the teaching of cultural appreciations of the country where the foreign language is spoken. That often entails the teaching of its artistic heritage. Thus, in teaching French, a teacher will often discuss the works of Monet and other famous artists. She pioneered the study of foreign languages in elementary schools (FLES*). She coordinated a number of Outreach programs at UMBC
(University of Maryland, Baltimore County), such as Special Language Days for high school students, and an international Language Camp for young children and served as a consultant to school districts and universities in the US and abroad. She holds a Bachelor’s degree from Brooklyn College, a Masters from the University of Maine, and a Doctorate from New York University.

She turned to artistic endeavors several years ago, and has received enthusiastic reviews of her artwork. She studied Art with artist Aniko Macranczy. She has had Art Shows in many different settings and galleries—-from community center galleries, to church galleries, to libraries, and even at the National Institute of Health

One curator noted that Gladys Lipton’s artwork was “eye-catching and engaging.”
