Aid for more significant ailments and Pains:
Booker's Bluegrass
Price: $60 for 750 ml.
By: Jim Beam
Origin: Clermont KY U.S.
Booker Noe was the Master Distiller at Jim Beam Distillery from 1965-1992 and launched his eponymous whiskey in 1988 to start the Small Batch Bourbon Collection. Booker's labels bear his name (his middle name, actually; he was born Frederick Booker Noe II) and his handwriting. Fred Noe, his son and seventh-generation Beam family distiller, is now releasing Booker's in batches using the same recipe. Booker's Bluegrass is the first 2016 small batch of this collection, but there's nothing small about its potency. This is powerful stuff, bottled at full strength after nearly seven years of aging at a whopping 127.9 proof. That means nearly two-thirds of each sweet sip is alcohol. While the original, full-bodied Booker's is nearly as strong, Basil Hayden's seems quaint at only 80 proof. But behind that intensity is a sweet, viscous vanilla and maple syrup flavor that will coat your mouth like adult candy. The alcohol is hidden on the nose, where one can detect vanilla and citrus. However, the alcohol burn is hard to ignore when sipped straight; don't be embarrassed to ask for water or rocks. The additives tame the alcohol and bring out hints of cocoa in the satisfying aftertaste. Booker's Bluegrass will warm you from the inside out.

Bulleit Bourbon 10 Years Old
Price: $40 for 750 ml.
ABV: 45.6%
By: Bulleit Frontier Whiskey
Origin: Lawrenceburg KY U.S.
Tom Bulleit's eponymous select reserve has been aged for 10 years in American white oak. It's a gorgeous russet hue and drinks rich and smooth. Vanilla and dried fruit flavor ease into a smoky finish. There is no bite here. Bulleit 10 is light on the tongue, perfect for sipping straight up or adding to a classic cocktail like an Old Fashioned.

Four Roses Small Batch
Price: $35 for 750 ml.
ABV: 45%
By: Four Roses Bourbon
Origin: Louisville KY U.S.
Despite a history dating back to 1888, the iconic name and its popularity, Four Roses stopped selling bourbon in the United States for 40 years. The whiskey was so popular in Asia that Kirin, the Japanese beer maker, bought the company in 2002 and started selling bourbon stateside. The Kentucky-based distillery combines its two mash recipes with five yeast strains to produce 10 different bourbons, four of which are used in Four Roses Small Batch. The Four Roses Small Batch is understated, with a very subtle aroma. The alcohol is intense on the palate, but it can be enjoyed neat, especially with the notes of sweet oak and caramel that linger before a long, clean, vanilla finish.

Jim Beam Single Barrel
Price: $35 for 750 ml.
ABV: 47.5%
By: Jim Beam
Origin: Clermont KY U.S.
As the best-selling brand of Kentucky straight bourbon in the world, Jim Beam is synonymous with this true-blue American whiskey. The brand's Single Barrel offering is full-bodied and smooth, with notes of sweet vanilla and caramel. This is a drink best enjoyed neat, as water or ice tend to dilute its flavor. Jim Beam Single Barrel has a clean, dry and oaky finish with hints of spice, but it lacks the burn that some aficionados crave.

WhistlePig- The 10 year
Price: $70 for 750 ml.
ABV: 50.0%
By: WhistlePig Farm
Origin: Shoreham, Vermont  U.S.
WhistlePig produces a 100-proof, straight rye whiskey, aged for at least ten years through a unique double-barrel process.
WhistlePig was released in the summer of 2010 to great critical acclaim, earning 96 points from Wine Enthusiast, their highest rating ever for a rye whiskey, a “highest recommendation” from Spirits Journal, as well as accolades from The Wall Street Journal, GQ, Forbes, Maxim, Imbibe Magazine, and many others. As Master Distiller Dave Pickerell notes, these extraordinary honors both “humble and set a high bar” for the company.
WhistlePig embodies the perfect combination of proof, purity, and age — hitting “the sweet spot” in all three categories. In short: more rye, all the proof, and the perfect age. All in. Full stop.

Hudson Four Grain
Price: $44 for 375 ml.
ABV: 50.0%
By: Tuthilltown Spirits Distillery
Origin: Gardiner NY US
Approximate Price: $44
Hudson Four Grain bourbon whiskey brings together the distinct characteristics of corn, rye, wheat and malted barley. Each batch starts with 800 pounds of grain which is ground at the distillery, cooked and fermented, then distilled twice. It is aged in our signature small barrels. Our Four Grain Bourbon is a rich full-flavored spirit. The grains are perfectly suited one to the others so that the end result balances the soft richness of corn, the sharp peppery notes of rye, all the smooth subtlety of wheat and the sweetness of malted barley. Each bottle is hand numbered.

Angels Envy
Price: $55 for 750 ml.
ABV: 43.3%
By: Louisville Distilling Co. LLC
Origin: Louisville KY US
Angel’s Envy Kentucky Straight Bourbon is finished in port wine casks for an award winning spirit. We guide each batch’s conditioning, blending our handcrafted bourbon in small batches of 8 to 10 barrels at a time. It’s typically aged for up to 6 years. While we lose about 5% of the spirit each year to evaporation, or “the Angel’s Share,” what’s left behind after we’re done is truly worthy of envy.
Once it’s deemed ready, we finish our bourbon in ruby port wine casks, adding subtle nuances that enhance the flavor without challenging it. Our port finishing process lasts between three to six months depending on taste. We use 60-gallon ruby port barrels made from French oak and imported directly from Portugal. This creates a whiskey of unprecedented smoothness, sweetness and balance.

Jefferson's Reserve
Price: $60 for 750 ml.
ABV: 45.1%
By: Louisville Distilling Co. LLC
Origin: Crestwood KY US
If you’ve been drinking bourbon for a while now you’ve probably heard of Jefferson’s. Produced by McLain & Kyne, Jefferon’s takes the concept of small batch to a new level. Their “very small batch” approach marries a mere 8-12 barrels of various age bourbons to produce their bottled bourbons. (As compared to the 200-300 barrels used in traditional small batch bourbons.)
Jefferson’s Reserve Very Old is one of four whiskeys currently offered by McLain & Kyne. Their other products include Jefferson’s, Jefferson’s Presidential Select and Jefferson’s Straight Rye Whiskey. (Jefferson’s Ocean bourbon is a unique and hard to find release – 600 bottles – done as an experiment in extreme condition aging.)
Jefferson’s Reserve Very Old is a truly elegant bourbon and one that I wouldn’t mind enjoying night after night. It’s at the higher end of mid-priced bourbons but I think that it’s well worth the price.
This bourbon holds a special place in my heart since it was one of the first bottles of bourbon that my wife purchased for me a number of years ago. She had apparently done some research and found that Jefferson’s Presidential Select was a great high-end choice so she set out to our local liquor store to buy me a bottle. When she got to the store she learned that they didn’t have it. Instead they recommended that she buy Jefferson’s Reserve. Luckily for me she did – along with a few others bourbons since it was cheaper than what she had originally set out to by me for my birthday. (Talk about a bourbon win!)
When you have a chance grab yourself a bottle and invite a few friends over. Sit outside and enjoy the night air while you sip on this wonderful bourbon and enjoy some friendly banter. I guarantee it will be a night to remember.
