Artist Statement:

The first time I had the opportunity to carve into a piece of wood and turn it into an image that I could print from, I knew I wanted to be a printmaker. I love the materials, the process, the graphic quality of the final product and the surprise that occurs each time I pull a new image from the plate. My work is created using a woodblock printing process with the addition of cut paper, hand painting or stenciling.

About The Artist:

Ellen Newell received an Associates in Art from Western Wyoming Community College and Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from The University of Montana at Missoula with a double emphasis in printmaking and painting. She has shown work in both group and solo exhibits in various venues, including the Gateway Art Center and JMC Gallery, both in New York City. As a member of the Green River Arts Council she provided advertising and assisted with the annual Art on the Green in Green River, Wyoming. Her series, Bent Covers, is a nine-piece set that spoofs book cover art, on permanent display in several libraries across the state of Wyoming. Her triptych, The Party Goers, can be seen at Johnny Macs in Rock Springs, Wyoming. In recent years, the Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County has included eight of Newell’s pieces in their permanent collection.
