MJ Marggraff – Far and Away: Going Beyond Earth Without Going Crazy
Imagine a very long trip away from home by yourself. You may be thinking of how you felt on your first away camp, a move to college, or a business trip abroad. We are getting closer to making trips beyond Earth a reality. In the years ahead, setting up a base on the moon and or Mars will mean embarking on the first human missions where a small crew takes a journey for several months in a confined spacecraft, and when they arrive, will reside on a new outpost where home is seen only as a distant blue dot. Long journeys with conditions that are isolated, confined, and extreme (ICE) often result in loneliness and depression, compromising job performance and teamwork. Finding the answers to minimize the effects of ICE is essential to helping the astronauts succeed. In her talk, Marggraff will explore what can be done to counter feelings of stress off the Earth, which can help us address loneliness so prevalent here on Earth. Additionally, she will explain how a new experiment, ‘SpaceGames’, inspires the next generation that designs games for zero gravity (0G) to be made on the OG 3D printer aboard the International Space Station (ISS). The first game, Star Catcher, made in space later this year to be played in space by the crew, also helps students better understand the lives of astronauts on extended flights.
