Item Description

A private Director's tour of the Litchfield History Museum and Tapping Reeve House and Law School with a sneak peak at the Society's new collections storage facility. Wine and cheese to follow. Limit 6 guests. The Litchfield History Museum invites visitors to explore the evolution of a small New England town. Furniture, historic clothing, household objects and paintings reveal Litchfield's history from its earliest European settlement to the present day. The museum's seven galleries highlight family life and work during the fifty years after the American Revolution, a time when Litchfield was a bustling commercial, political, and educational center. Hands-on areas help visitors discover the town's past. During your visit you will explore the Tapping Reeve House & Law School which takes visitors on a journey through the life of a real student from the early 19th century. Through role-playing, hands-on areas, and interpretive exhibits, each visitor explores timeless issues of travel, communication, education, and community. With almost 1,000 students attending from every region of post-Revolutionary America, the Litchfield Law School launched the careers of many well-known Americans including two vice-presidents, 101 United States congressmen, twenty-eight United States senators, six cabinet members, three justices of the United States supreme court, fourteen governors and thirteen chief justices of state supreme courts. Many more graduates held state and local political office, while others became leaders of the nation's emerging corporate, mercantile, industrial and financial establishments. More than twenty alumni of the school were the founders or early professors of new law schools. The Litchfield Law SchoolâÂ?Â?s first and most notorious student was Aaron Burr, brother-in-law of the schoolâÂ?Â?s founder, Tapping Reeve. Learn more at www.litchfieldhistoricalsociety.org
