Item Description

One-of-a-kind “shibori” fabrics.

Smith is a leading designer of the Japanese resist dyeing technique called Shibori, which produces patterns on fabric. Since 1965 he has created hundreds of techniques working with silks and dyes. He prints directly onto the fabrics and attains highly intricate kaleidoscopic patterns in vivid colors.

His clothing has been worn by notables from Elizabeth Taylor to Aretha Franklin. Mary Travers wore Carter’s creations when she performed with Peter, Paul, and Mary, and Mick Jagger has also worn his designs on stage.

Smith’s treasured fabrics have been featured at Halston and Christian Dior, in design publications, and in major museums and private collections.
