Item Description

Made during the Japanese occupation of Taiwant 1895-1945

Antique Chinese canopy wedding bed, with elaborate details and
beautifully carved panels and paintings. The bed has a storage area,
mirrors and clothing hooks. Traditionally, the window openings were
covered with beautiful silks in the warm months and thicker fabrics during
the winter months.

The raised bed platform has a mattress-like cushion for sleeping. This area
is equivalent to a full size Western bed, 47' X 76'. Construction of the bed
is fascinating, as no nails or glue were used. All wooden framework,
beams, supports, panels, and carvings are held in place by locking together
with tension making assembly and disassembly simple. In fact, the
entire bed can be assembled in approximately one hour.

Japan occupied Taiwan between 1895 and 1945, following the Qing
Dynasty. The bed has two wooden carvings of the Japanese and
Taiwanese Flags intertwined.

The bed has been loved and used since my mother purchased it
for me when we lived in Taipei, Taiwan, in the 1970’s.
