Item Description
Charlotte Torgovitsky is a naturalist, educator, and garden consultant who has lived with her family in Novato for most of the last 30 years. An organic gardener since 1975, she is currently developing her own two-acre property, working in a sustainable and resourceful way with native soils and plants to create gardens that provide for family and friends as well as sanctuary for wildlife.
An avid plant propagator for many years, Charlotte is founder of Home Ground Habitat Nursery. She was Garden Education Manager at the Marin Art and Garden Center from 2001 to 2009, where she created numerous California native gardens and educational programs for children and adults.
Larner Seeds in Bolinas seeks to promote the riches of our native California flora, through supplying their customers with California's native seeds, native plants, and books, advice, and landscaping services for their own backyard restoration project. Their demonstration garden is an over 35-year old example and model, giving back territory to the native plants that evolved to support the insects, the soil, the birds, the watersheds and the unique beauty of California.
The Larner Seeds Nursery maintains a diverse stock of California native plants, from rare and endangered annual wildflowers, to perennial grasses and forbs, trees and shrubs.
The University of California at Berkeley's Urban Bee Lab has been working since 1987 on documenting bee diversity and bee frequencies on wild California plants in several northern California sites. After several years of sampling in residential areas of the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area they have found about 90 species of bees, most of which are native to California.
