Item Description
Ever so delicate and lovely, this miniature vase by Danish potter Inge Nielsen is a tiny treasure. About 2" tall and 1" wide at the widest point, the vase was made in the artist's studio in Brussels, Belgium, where she makes Chinese inspired pottery.
In the artist's own words...
"I came to this (pre)occupation in a very round-about way. I originally studied for an academic career in Chinese Studies in Durham, England, then Beijing, China, and finally Princeton, USA, throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. My Chinese base was for a long time Beijing, and hence my early introduction to Chinese tea was through a glass pickle jar. My interest in tea ware grew while traveling in Fujian, and when I finally moved to Taipei, Taiwan with my family in 2009, I started learning pottery with Zheng De-yong in his Huayan studio.
Like myself, my pottery owes a lot to Chinese culture. I find that Chinese pottery has some at times rigid rules about form and proportions, but since I am not Chinese I decided to apply them freely. The classic tianmu bowl is my favorite morning coffee cup, and I enjoy seeing the tianmu shapes take form on the wheelhead. I also work a lot with the traditional Chinese iron glazes: black tianmu, iron red and teadust. I used to love glazing in celadon, Guan and Jun glases, but for the moment I am restricted to oxidation firings and thus cannot pursue my interest in these glazes. While I like straight copies of the classic pieces, I often cannot resist trying to use the Chinese forms and glazes in ways that are "un-Chinese"."
