The town of Norwich, CT, has a long and illustrious history.
The Leffingwell Inn encapsulates the whole of that story. Built as a simple two room house in 1675 by Stephen Backus, the house later belonged to Thomas Leffingwell. In 1701, Thomas was granted permission to keep an inn. Benajah Leffingwell, Thomas’ son, was also an innkeeper. The first additions to the original house were made to accommodate its use as an inn. The building descended to Christopher Leffingwell, a gentleman of utmost importance to the town and to the entire commonwealth. With his entrepreneurial skills and business connections he was invaluable as a supplier of provisions for the Revolutionary forces. The Society of the Founders of Norwich, CT was founded October 10, 1901. The Mission of Society of the Founders of Norwich is to promote the history of Norwich through education. The Leffingwell House Museum provides a safe and secure location for historical artifacts and documents pertaining to early Norwich.
The successful bidder will receive a gift package that will encourage an in-depth adventure in Norwich history, and includes the following: a one-year family membership in the Society which entitles the bearer access to the Leffingwell House Museum during regular open hours, including annual newsletters and access to the museum's archives; a copy of Historic Sites of Norwich, by Bill Stanley; a copy of the Autobiography of James L.Smith, recollections of his life as a slave and his life in Norwich; the booklet of Persons and Places in the Ancient Town of Norwich 1909 reprint for the town's 250th Anniversary; the booklet the History of the Leffingwell Inn (including its relocation in 1960); a print of the original deed to the Norwich Green in 1729; and a Leffingwell Inn magnet and bookmark.
