Item Description

This "Keep it in the Ground!" banner has flown at three major events: "Democracy Awakening" in DC, "Hurricane Katrina 10th anniversary," and at the First Nation's (led by Tom Goldtooth) "Keep it in the Ground March in Minnesota."

This 3x4 ft banner was used by Sierra Club President, Aaron Mair, who joined in the Indigenous Environmental Network march with Tom Goldtooth & Congressman Keith Ellison in the Tar Sands Resistance March to show solidarity with indigenous peoples fighting against Canadian tar-sand oil extractions and subsequent pipeline developments such as the Keystone XL Pipeline.

"Keep it in the ground" evokes the urgency of activists calling to stop environmental degredation and contributions to climate change that large-scale oil extraction and pipeline constructions confer. These movements also call out governmental efforts to deny the rights of indigenous peoples.

As indigenous peoples continue to lead the fight against big-oil corporations, this banner is especially meaningful and relevant today in North Dakota where thousands of people have gathered from around the world to stand in solidarity with the Standing Rock Sioux to protest the construction of Dakota Access Pipeline. The pipeline will transport oil across four states from North Dakota to Illinois, and will jeopardize sacred ancestral lands, cross the Mississippi river and Lake Oahe.
