Gunn Historical Museum Curator, Stephen Bartkus, together with Museum Director, Louise van Tartwijk, will lead a 90 minute guided private hike for up to 6 people in the beautiful Steep Rock Preserve in Washington, Connecticut, past the remains of the Valley Station Railroad Bridge to the ruins of the Holiday House, a magnificent hotel designed by architect Ehrick Rossiter that once stood on the hillside overlooking the Shepaug River. Built in 1893 by wool magnate Edward van Ingen, this imposing structure, complete with ballroom and bowling alley, was created as a philanthropic initiative to offer working class women from New York City a restorative vacation retreat.
