Item Description
Bidder's choice of Eight-Week Summer Intensive Course from Rangjung Yeshe Institute in Kathmandu, Nepal.
Choose to attend either the Buddhist Studies Intensive or Beginning Colloquial Tibetan during either summer 2017 or 2018. The courses run for two months each summer, beginning mid-June each year.
The Buddhist Studies Intensive features innovative teaching methods which combine a Western academic approach and the traditional monastic shedra-style approach to exploration of the main tenet systems of Buddhist philosophy. The first six weeks of the course is taught by lopons or khenpos from Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling Monastery, and a Western academic professor. The final two weeks of the course are spent at Asura Cave Monastery in Pharping, Nepal on retreat where students explore the application of their previous weeks of study directly to personal meditation practice guided by a Tibetan lama.
The Beginning Colloquial Tibetan course is team-taught by a native speaker of Tibetan and a Western instructor fluent in Tibetan. Teaching methods include master class grammar instruction, one-on-one conversation classes with native speakers, and interactive games, vocabulary drilling, and fluency exercise. Students report significant levels of language acquisition in only eight weeks of study.
Classes are held within the Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling Monastery complex, just a few minutes' walk from the Great Stupa of Boudhanath in the Kathmandu Valley.
The summer programs are accredited by Kathmandu University. Many students from foreign universities take the summer programs for academic credit in their own countries at their own universities toward their undergraduate or graduate degrees. On average there are students from more than 30 different countries attending the summer program.
Rangjung Yeshe Institute has conducted study programs in Nepal for more than twenty-five years under the guidance of Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche, abbot of Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling Monastery. Visit www.ryi.org for more information about any of the programs offered at RYI.
