Item Description

This certificate entitles the winner to a private tour for up to four (4) adults (16 years and older) of the Canada-France-Hawaii telescope headquarters in Waimea, followed by dinner at the mid-level facility on the slopes of Mauna Kea.

Then the magic happens as the group will receive a private sunset tour of the Canada-France-Hawaii observatory on Mauna Kea. This tour is not offered to the general public. Transportation provided from Canada-France-Hawaii Waimea office.

The Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) is a non-profit organization that operates a world class 3.6 meter telescope atop Mauna Kea, a dormant Hawaiian volcano rising 4,200 meters (14,000 feet) above the Pacific Ocean. The Observatory headquarters are  located nearby in Waimea (Kamuela, Big Island, Hawaii), where CFHT has been part of the community since 1977.

The CFHT team of some 50 people includes engineers, technicians, astronomers, and administrators. The role of CFHT is to operate, maintain and upgrade all the observatory systems, to make sure that the telescope remains scientifically competitive, and to provide first rate instrumentation to its users community: CFHT is currently open to astronomers from Canada, France and Hawaii, the European Union through Opticon and Taiwan and Brazil through collaboration agreements.

Item Special Note

Tour and dinner must be completed by December 2017. The actual date to be agreed upon by a single individual designated to speak for the tour group and Canada-France-Hawaii.

Warm clothing is essential for the visit to Mauna Kea.

The air at the summit is very thin so children under 16, pregnant women and people with respiratory, heart or severe overweight conditions are advised NOT to go higher than the OCIA Visitors Information Station (9,300 feet above sea level.) Scuba divers must wait at least 24 hours after their last dive before traveling to the summit of Mauna Kea.
