The history of Seto-yaki (Seto ware) dates back to the 8th century in Aichi prefecture. At this time, it was the only area in Japan producing glazed ceramics. During the Edo period (1603-1867), Seto's ceramic industry flourished due to the production of a range of items, from those for everyday household use to exquisite works of art. “Seto chinaware”, as it came to be known, became coveted in many parts of the world.
Historically, Seto’s natural resources make it ideal as a center for producing fine quality porcelain goods. The clay in the surrounding mountains is of superior quality and has a high silica content. There are also dense forests nearby to provide wood to fire the kilns. Over 1,000 ancient kilns have been discovered in various parts of the Seto region.
