Item Description
Pu'uhonua in Hawaiian means a place of refuge, where early Hawaiians could find forgiveness and solace. This 3 bedroom, 2 bath home with a well-stocked kitchen and expansive deck nestled among native O'hia trees beckons you to renew and seek refuge from your unforgiving world too!

Three comfortable bedrooms, two modern baths with granite counter tops, a well equipped kitchen with an 8 foot granite counter-topped island, and a 30 foot deck nestled in native Ohi'a trees, all welcome you to a home away from home while you explore the east side of Hawaii. Pu'uhonua offers you and your guests spaces to relax among nature, with the singing of birds and serenading of resident coqui frogs. The soothing sounds of gentle rain in the evenings, and the warm sunny days make this a perfect location for rest and rejuvenation.
The master bedroom has an Olympic queen ultimate comfort bed and an over sized shower in the en suite master bathroom. There is a queen bed in the second guest room, and a queen bed in the third guest bedroom. The larger hallway bathroom, shared by both guest bedrooms, includes a bath tub and granite counter tops.
Chefs will love the kitchen, which includes stainless steel refrigerator and dishwasher, oven and stove, microwave and all the cookware and spices you may need to whip up remarkable meals.
The 30 foot deck and front porch warms in the morning sun, and by 3 p.m is perfectly shaded with cool breezes, perfect for reading and relaxing, overlooking a Hawaiian lava rock garden rich in orchids, kahili gingers, bromiliads, palms and Hapuu ferns.
During the day, guests will find the snorkeling equipment handy to take to nearby Kapoho and Champagne tide pools, and for the more adventurous, hikes into a secret beach will amaze you! Restaurants range from Mexican food (LuQuins is a favorite of many Pahoa residents) and for remarkable seafood and local foods, try KaLeo's restaurant. You'll find unique local arts, crafts, and famous organic produce at Maku'u Market every Sunday up on Highway 130, where local musicians play...live like a local, and fit right in!
Estimated Driving times:
to/from Hilo town: 30 minutes (20 miles)
to Volcano National Park: 45 minutes (33 miles)
to end of road (lava viewing into ocean): 20 minutes (12 miles)
to Kapoho Tide Pools (snorkeling) & Pohoiki Bay (boat tours): 15-20 minutes (8 miles)
to Pahoa town: 10 minutes (6 miles)
From Kona side: drive time is approximately 3 1/2 hour drive (via Saddle Road)
Guest access
Guests have the entire property to themselves (but for a few private storage areas). High speed internet is useful too...since cell phone service can be sometimes limited in our area.
Interaction with guests
Independent travelers can easily check in on their own, but if you prefer, a local neighbor can meet and greet you and offer valuable information about our area.
The neighborhood
Hawaiian Shores is known for its sparkling private well water and it's unique placement in the sun belt...where Hilo may be raining, we often have clear and sunny days and 80 degree weather!
Getting around
You'll need a rental car for our place; while there are public buses that run to and from town hourly, they are not as dependable for exploring our very big island!
Other things to note
In the dark of night, and without street lights, the stars literally jump from the sky!
