About the artist:

Mara Clawson meticulously works and reworks her images and the colors of her subjects until they emerge in a way that is pleasing to her. Mara states that she knows when a piece is finished "when colors get along". She often says making art "makes me who I am"and "gives me courage."

Mara's first two solo exhibitions were in the Adat Shalom Reconstructionist Synagogue in Bethesda MD. Currently, through December 18th, Mara's largest solo show, titled "The World of Feelings: When Colors Get Along" can be viewed at the Goldman Art Gallery in the Bender JCC of Greater Washington, Rockville Maryland.

Two months ago, Mara won a 2016 VSA Emerging Young Artists Award of Excellence, sponsored by the Kennedy Center and Volkswagen Group of America. Her video "To Survive" is touring across the US, in the show titled (Re)invention, which is currently at the Daedalus Foundation in Brooklyn, NY.

Also in 2016, Mara's art making process expanded when she began to draw using an iPad - her creativity flows and new concepts emerge. iPad technology also permits others to watch, in time-lapse, Mara's artistic process, which adds time and motion to her creative vocabulary. Mara currently produces artworks at Art Enables in Washington, DC and in her home studio. She enjoys fulfilling requests for commissioned artwork and illustrating children's storybooks.
