Artist's Statement:

Why I Paint Intuitively

I've never had much of an attention span for things I'm not totally fascinated by. Creating art comes from a personal need to express emotions and work through problems. It really is, for me, much like having an intimate relationship. Every painting is unique and comes from a different inspiration and so, evolves independently from all the others.

When I work in a series and all the panels begin the same way, my initial intention is to make them a cohesive group. It seldom works out that way. Because there are so many layers in my paintings, by the time I get the first ones completed...   There has been an exchange, of sorts, between those paintings and myself. I have been changed by the experience of painting.

Everything in life constantly changes.

I believe art is a by product of my personal evolutionary process. All people are made to create something in order to express their divinity. I happen to paint with beeswax on birch panels with a blow torch.

Some artists may say my approach to painting demonstrates that I'm not making art-only messing around. That paintings should be meticulously planned out, ahead of their production, and be amplified versions of initial sketches. Real artists should be so practiced in their medium that they are its master and it dares not but to obey.

Now, I am all for competent execution in any endeavour but have you ever heard that the need for control is the number one human addiction?

You may be wondering, "If everything that happens in her process isn't intentional, how could she ever recreate a painting?"

My question is, "Why would I want to?"

We can't go back in time and relive our pasts. Even if we could, for what purpose? The challenges of yesterday are over and, I believe, the best way to stifle inspiration is to dwell in a place you have no power. There is vast possibility in now. That's how I feel about my art. I want to paint what's happening now. What can I learn from today?
