Item Description

This 20th Century work of art by Zvi Mairovich, one of Israel's most noted and sought after painters, is a contemporary oil on canvas of a stylized lady. Framed. 32" x 23.5" .

Born in Korsano Poland, he moved to Berlin in 1929. Abandoning rabbinical studies, he began studying painting with Karl Hoffer at the Academy in Berlin while earning his living by designing posters for the UFA film company.

In 1934 he immigrated to Haifa, Israel, and continued working as a designer of posters for movies. In 1949-1950 he worked in Paris.

During the late fifties Mairovich painted landscape’s and still life’s which gradually transitioned to abstracts. By the late 50’s, he produced dramatic gouache abstracts in large format. Mairovich’s oils mainly focused on abstract landscapes, with stormy contrasts between darkness and flashes of light, verging upon the metaphysical. Using oil and gauche techniques he painted landscapes, still life’s and female portraits.

His early figurative canvases featured a green-blue-brown chromatism, the subsequent abstract paintings were in brighter colors, and from 1966 he worked on large sheets of paper with mixed media techniques.

In his later days, he created powerful abstract landscapes which are considered to be some of his best works in terms of technique. Mairovich belonged to the New Horizons group of Israeli artists.

He was the winner of the Dizengoff prize of 1942, 1951 and 1961, the Struck Prize (1957), the Schiff Award (1969) and the Milo Prize (1972). Mairovich has exhibited in important museums in Israel and in galleries all over the world.
